What is a well-woman exam?
Well-woman exams are an essential preventive care tool. These annual visits provide you with the screenings you need to stay healthy and detect any possible problems.
A well-woman exam typically includes a pelvic exam, clinical breast exam, and blood or urine tests to evaluate your health. You typically begin these tests around the age of 13-15. The early exams don’t usually include a pelvic exam, but give you a chance to form a relationship with a trusted provider.
What happens during well-woman exams?
Your well-woman exam starts with basic information gathering, such as changes in your health history, your blood pressure, and weight. You’ll discuss any symptoms or concerns you have. These include symptoms of menopause, fertility questions, or concerns about STDs.
Your doctor conducts a pelvic exam to examine your internal and external vaginal tissue and your cervix to look for any visible abnormalities. At some well-woman exams, you’ll undergo a Pap smear to check for signs of abnormal cervical cells that could be a precursor to cancer.
You’ll also receive a breast exam during which the doctor gently examines your breast tissue for any irregularities.
